Outline of features
The Breadcrumbs GPS track management system alpha version is due to launch in March 2010, and will bring users an extremely rich set of tools for managing and interacting with their GPS tracks. Here, we will outline a few of the key tools:
Upload Tracks
Breadcrumbs will support every major GPS format on the market. On upload, track statistics (including max speed, average speed, elevation, etc) will be automatically populated to the track’s profile. We will also launch with an iPhone app.
Manage and Edit Tracks
Breadcrumbs is designed so that you can upload multiple tracks at once, for a range of activities We are extremely excited to be able to offer our users the ability to upload and manage as many tracks as they want, and hope that you will quickly start to realise that Breadcrumbs is so much more than just a website.
Once uploaded, Breadcrumbs will allow you to edit the track. As we know that there are often minor mistakes in GPS data we have provided an intuitive interface so that you can fix any errors (in 3D of-course!).
Interact with Tracks
The website revolves around Google Earth, which is embedded in your browser. What this means is that when you upload your track you will be able to interact with it directly in 3D in your browser! We think this is huge. You can interact with the track you just uploaded in a virtual 3D world. You can play back the track and truly re-live your adventure.
Add photos and videos to your Tracks
The next exciting component of the application is the ability to add media to your track. We have built an extremely simple interface (much of it automated), which allows you to quickly upload video and photos and tag it on the track. This allows you to not only view your track in a 3D world, but also to tag an unlimited amount of photos and videos onto the track, allowing your memories and future trip planning to be more in depth than ever before.
Search Tracks
One of the main aims of Breadcrumbs is to provide a platform for sharing GPS tracks and experiences. You won’t have to share your tracks if you don’t want to, but we will encourage you to do so. As we are mapping experts with a huge amount of expertise working with spatial data we have a few tricks up our sleeve and think that your experience when searching for the track you want will be first class.
Export Tracks
Of course, once you have found the track you want to follow, you can easily upload it to your GPS device or iPhone and follow the trail!
Share Tracks
We will have direct Facebook and Twitters plug-ins so that after a long day’s activity you can easily let your friends play back your experience in 3D and see all the cool photos and videos of the mountain you rode, or the routes you sailed!
These features are the core of our application that will be released in our beta release later this year. We have a host of other features that we cannot wait to share with you so watch this space.
And Finally…
If you were wondering about our name, Breadcrumbs is taken from the fairytale ‘Hansel and Gretel’. The siblings laid a trail of breadcrumbs to help them find their way back to their house when their evil stepmother tried to keep them away. In the story, the breadcrumbs are not successful as a good guide, but we know that our digital Breadcrumbs will be more enduring! Our vision is to map the world with your Breadcrumbs. So please, start dropping and sharing now…
