Plan your Route with our new Drawing Tool
Our initially goal at Breadcrumbs was to allow you to relive your adventures and share your tracks with your friends and family. Since then people have given us feedback that they wanted to be able to plan as well as view completed trips. Therefore, Breadcrumbs now lets you draw tracks rather than having to import them.
When building features, as active users of Breadcrumbs we often just build what we want to use. Here is when and how I use the new drawing tools.
- If I go for a run (or any activity for that matter) and forget to take my GPS I use the draw tools to get the track into Breadcrumbs so I can look at the statistics and see how far I have gone. We also have a snap to roads feature which means you can draw tracks in urban areas very quickly.
- If I am planning a route for an upcoming trip, then I will draw it first in Breadcrumbs to see if the distances and elevation profiles are realistic. I use this the most when I am going backcountry skiing and there is no defined route as such, but I want to plan my route to make sure the distance between huts and camp spots are realistic.
- Depending on where I am going I often like to have the track I am doing loaded into my Garmin or iPhone app so i can do trackback. Trackback makes it easy to stay on track if you are in an area where the trail isn’t that well marked. All I do is draw the track in Breadcrumbs, export it as a GPX and then either upload it to MotionX or my Garmin using Basecamp.

When designing the plugin we realized that many other existing GPS plugins were inflexible and couldn’t be customized. Your blog/website is your identity and we wanted to ensure you could tailor the look and feel of the plugin to ensure it fits your exact needs. The plugin therefore ships with over 9 settings you can tweak to do anything from control the width/height of the plugin to adding a dynamic chart or media panel. Full details on how to configure and install the plugin are available here.
The plugin allows you to embed tracks and photos/videos you have uploaded to Breadcrumbs in your own blog. Here is an example of what it looks like:

It has been a little over a year since we officially launched Breadcrumbs. Since then we have grown steadily and now have an active community with over 50,000 tracks. Initially when we launched we focused on the application which you have successfully used to upload and organize your GPS tracks, photos and videos. With this new release we bring you a complete redesign and restructuring of the rest of the website. We are extremely pleased with the end result and hope you enjoy using it as much as we enjoyed building it. We think it makes Breadcrumbs much easier to use and navigate but more importantly more fun!

A bundle helps you organize you GPS tracks within Breadcrumbs. You can think of a bundle like a folder on your PC where you group tracks logically together. Once you have uploaded tracks to a

bundle you can also look at the bundle statistics to view stats such as the total distance, total time and total elevation gain for all tracks.
Previously in Breadcrumbs we initially designed it so that an activity (i.e. Hiking) could contain bundles and then each bundle contained tracks. What we (and you guys) quickly came to realize is that often you want to group tracks from different activities in the same bundle. For example, let’s say you create a bundle called Summer 2011, within that bundle you don’t want to be limited to just uploading hiking tracks. Our latest release solves this problem and lets you assign tracks of any activity type to a bundle.
What this means is that when you login to the Breadcrumbs application the tree panel will look slight different. Rather than expanding an activity and then a bundle you will just expand a bundle (see right). This is a minor change and it won’t affect your current organization but moving forward it will give you much more flexibility in how you organize your tracks.
Order your bundles by dragging to the desired order in the tree.
Don’t forget to move tracks between bundles you simply drag and drop tracks from one bundle to another in the tree panel. New for this release you can also control the order your bundles appear in the tree by simply dragging and dropping the bundles.

We’re pleased to announce the launch of our first Android integration with the excellent Open GPS Tracker.
You can now track your route on your Android-powered Smartphone and instantly upload it to Breadcrumbs. You can also view all your Breadcrumbs tracks on the go. The best bit is that both apps are completely free!

Organization has been a key focus of the gobreadcrumbs GPS track management app and the tree view has been at the heart of that, providing a great way for you to visualize and organize your tracks.

Grid View
As the number of tracks you imported increased it became apparent there needed to be a way you could quickly access tracks and sort based upon the track name, activity, date imported and bundle name. So we created the grid view. The grid view is accessed by clicking on the grid icon just above the tree panel (see screen grab below).

The grid view provides a completely new way for you to find and interact with your tracks. You can sort by several different columns. My personal favorite is the date imported column as you can now import a track and access it instantly by viewing the grid view (we sort by date import by default).

So login and give it a go, you may well end up finding tracks and reliving adventures that you had long forgotten about! Thanks to everyone who gave feedback asking for the feature too.

We wanted to make you aware of an issue with the most current release of the MotionX GPS application which I know many of you use to track your adventures on the iPhone before uploading the GPX file to Breadcrumbs.
I have had confirmation from MotionX that there was an issue with the GPX that the app produced in version 16.2 which causes it to fail to upload to Breadcrumbs (and any other mapping application). This issue will be fixed in version 16.3 which should be available from the app store shortly.

Overview
Ever been out tracking and left your GPS device running and included your journey home? Us too! Fortunately, Breadcrumbs’ new GPS track splitting functionality makes chopping off the unwanted part of your GPS/GPX tracks easy.
Whether you have tracked your day out with your Garmin or smartphone (GPX file), you will now be presented with the option to split the track on import. The split tool allows you to define a new start and end point for the track you logged, ensuring you only upload and generate statistics on the portion of the track you are interested in. Let’s say you have been out on a 3 hour trip, but only 1 hour was interesting enough to include in your blog. Using the new splitting tool you can extract the specific part of the track you are interested in and embed it in your blog.
Steps to perform the track split:
Step 1: Login to Breadcrumbs
Step 2: Choose to import data via either a GPX file or Garmin device.
Step 3: Choose the GPX file/select the Garmin device you wish to upload from.
Step 4: It is on step 2 of 6 in the import wizard where you perform the split. Select the track you wish to split.
Step 5: Click Split Track on the top toolbar.
Step 6: Select the start and end point of the new track on the map. You need to do this in the direction of travel, so first select the start point near the beginning of your track, then select an end point somewhere on the remaining part of the line, which we colored red.
Step 7: The split is complete, click Next and you can continue with the import.

Sharing your GPS tracks with your friends and family is one of the great features of Breadcrumbs and it just got even easier! Breadcrumbs’ new plugin functionality allows you to embed the GPS track you uploaded directly into your own website/blog. The plugin allows your visitors to see on a map both the GPS track you uploaded from your Garmin device or GPX file and any associated photos/videos that were geocoded. For the first release we support the Google Maps view, support for the full 3D Breadcrumbs experience using the Google Earth plugin will come soon.
New Embed button within the app
Embedding the GPS track into your website/blog couldn’t be easier. Simply upload your GPS track and any associated media as you would usually do. Once uploaded select the track and then click on the new ‘Embed track’ button, this gives you the HTML code you need to copy and paste into your own website. You can also access the code on the public page.

Here at Breadcrumbs we’re thrilled to announce the launch of our completely redesigned public track page (showcased here). One of our main aims at Breadcrumbs is to allow you and your friends to relive your adventures. The new public page does this by putting you in complete control of your track interactions and associated media. At the heart of the redesign we have introduced a new media view which puts your photos and videos as the main focus.
We also have a load of other great new features including:
- Map, elevation/speed chart and statistics dynamically integrated: As you playback your track, watch the statistics and chart change. You’ll be able to tell exactly how fast you went on the steep line you skied or the trail you rode. There is no better way to visualize your GPS tracks.
- Google Maps playback: Now play your track back in Google Maps as well as Google Earth.
- Comments: A new Breadcrumbs comment system allows you and your friends to chat about your day out.
